CONSTANÇA ENTRUDO X EMA GASPAR AW23 at ModaLisboa Core
The myth of the Thread Monster
For her AW23 collection “Don’t look back” Constança Entrudo collaborated with Lisbon-based visual artist Ema Gaspar. Together they spun the tale of the Thread Monster, a gossamer trickster inspired by Constança’s un-weaving technique. With Ema’s coloured pencil drawings, the Thread Monster entangles us in a mythic world of disarray, regeneration and liberation from the loom.

Known for her imaginative experimentation with fabrics, the Lisbon-based and Madeira-born designer Constança Entrudo focuses her production methods on upcycling, with creativity, a sense of humor and a connection with nature at the center of her work. She creates her designs and sustainable fabrics by hand in her studio in Lisbon, resulting from a constant process of trial and error, deconstruction and reconstruction. With a guiding objective to minimize impact on the environment, her pieces are characterised by bold graphic prints, irregular proportions and deconstructed woven fabric. Prior to starting her eponymous label in 2018, Constança worked as a textile designer for Balmain and Peter Pilotto, interned with Marques’Almeida and studied textile design at Central Saint Martins in London.
For her latest collection, Constança spins the mythic tale of the Thread Monster, told through a cotton-candy-coloured dreamscape.
The Thread Monster was once just another yarn in the weft of a loom waiting for the day it would be made woven. On a long winter night, joining forces with other threads also tired of the loom impositions, they managed to escape and develop their own path: a path to liberation and disarray.
At the start, single threads covertly affix themselves to hems and stockings, becoming bolder as they attach to stray hairs and even eyelashes. The images get cloudier and less distinct as the threads combine to capture full heads of hair, shirts and fingertips. By the end, the Thread Monster—like Constança’s reconstructed fabric designs—has fully freed itself from the loom.
My interest for myths has grown throughout the years, powered by the realization that myths are not childish stories but serious insights into reality. They are part of the fabric of human life, express beliefs, moulding behaviour. When old myths are lost, new ones are needed.
