Enter The Void

In a world full of dualities, ambitions and multiple perspectives, we meet up-and-coming fashion designer VOID. His collection DOOR 19 focuses on fragments of a personal history and the development of the idea of multiple selves. Combining movement and photography, VOID and our editorial team, led by our Creative Director and Beauty Editor Antonia Rosa, transcend the limits of materials on human skin in a symphony of tension, balance and an emblematic photo shoot by Sergio Santos.

The designer behind VOID does not want to be limited to one person. Their identity is faceless and lies in the VOID, the presence in their pieces. Since his 2023 collection at Moda Madeira, they have been using paper collages as the basis for prints on fabric. In a second step, the collages are digitised and further manipulated to create a mix and matrix of layers. Presented at the Sangue Novo competition during Moda Lisboa last October, their DOOR 19 collection features an urban style with unisex streetwear silhouettes, neutral colours, flowing, structured pieces and draping – with an emphasis on durable and long-lasting materials such as fabrics like denim, satin, lycra and jersey.

I was backstage at ModaLisboa SINGULAR and suddenly I saw beautiful girls tangled up in portraits of a woman and a man. When I realised who these photos were of, I spoke to VOID and we decided to print the photos of his mother and father on the models’s own skin, as if the clothes were transferred onto the body. So I decided to make tattoos of the photos.

Photographer Sergio Santos has captured VOID’s collection like fluid traces, in a series of double exposures that make the digital print collages look almost organic, more like a painting with brushstrokes and expressionist textures. VOID quotes in the press release: “The VOID concept is still present with the absence of identity, but we realise that the creative direction is born from a real love story, and that VOID has SOUL”.

In the interview below, we talk to VOID about their journey into fashion, the creative process and try to bring you closer to VOID´s soul.

ZOOT: We understand that you don’t want to give away too much personal information, but can you tell our readers where your passion for fashion comes from, why you chose this path and what your professional journey has been like so far?

VOID: Void began its journey studying fashion design at university. It quickly became clear that void needed to find its own path. With loyal brand supporters following along on its journey, we quickly realized that we were capable of forging our own path. Without the need to have a face or two.

ZOOT: You build all this mystery around your brand and identity, why are you so fascinated by the concept of “no identity”?

VOID: Anonymity allows the focus to remain on the work rather than the individual. We believe that our quality and design speaks for itself. The absence of a fixed identity creates space for interpretation and connection beyond personal narratives.

When Void and the editorial team came together, we envisioned creating something dynamic, where movement and photography would speak for themselves.

— VOID

ZOOT: In your press release you talk about a “data leak”, are the images of your DOOR 19 collection random or are they family pictures?

VOID: The images are intentionally ambiguous—fragments of personal history mixed with abstraction, blurring the lines between memory and fiction. What we do know is that void was built from a real story of love.

ZOOT: Who do the two faces on your prints represent, and what does VOID mean to you? Does it embody emptiness or rather bareness? Why did you choose this name for your brand?

VOID: The two faces represent duality—presence and absence, self and projection. VOID is not emptiness; it’s a space for transformation, an open field of possibilities. The name reflects the tension between nothingness and creation.

ZOOT: What inspires you?

VOID: Here at void we have been collecting fragments of stories, both lived and told, and weaving them into visual narratives through clothing.

ZOOT: What worries you about our world and our society?

VOID: I am concerned that despite technological advances and greater access to knowledge, humanity should be progressing, but I feel that it is regressing. That is what worries me today.

ZOOT: How do you source your fabrics and what textures do you like to work with?

VOID: Fabrics are sourced with care, prioritizing quality, longevity and innovation we create our own digital prints in house. Creating new fabrics. At void we believe that clothes should last a lifetime. I gravitate toward contrasts—silk against structured wool, sheer organza layered with rigid denim. It’s about tension, balance, and pushing material boundaries.

ZOOT: Is sustainability important to you?

VOID: Yes, because sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s a responsibility. Longevity, ethical production, and material innovation are central to VOID’s approach.

ZOOT: You mention “Three Faces” in a note about the photo shoot. What does the concept of three faces mean to you?

VOID: “Three Faces” explores the idea of multiple selves — the one we show, the one we hide, and the one that emerges when no one is looking.

ZOOT: Whats next for VOID?

VOID: You will have to join the cult to find out.

Thank you very much!
