ZOOT x IADE: Zeitgeist

This ia a collaboration between our team at ZOOT Magazine and the Creative Photography course run by Luis Santos at IADE University in Lisbon. ZOOT has always been about building creative bridges and forging a multicultural global community – all in support of freedom of expression, artistry and humanity. For this collaboration with 17 photography students from IADE University from the course “Licenciatura em Fotografia e Cultura Visual” , we asked them to delve into to the current ZEITGEIST. The world is changing rapidly, we are confronted with political uncertainties and new realities, as well as the massive impact of our consumption of fossil energy on climate and migration. We all live in the same world, and we only have this one world. Every war we fight, every government we elect, every fuel we burn affects us all as a community, as one world.
The students were divided into four groups, each of which was accompanied by an up-and-coming fashion stylist who had graduated from ETIC in Lisbon. Together with Professor Luis Santos and our team at ZOOT, they explored how they feel about the world around them and how they experience the current ZEITGEIST.
Our fashion editor Anderson Vescah supported the styling students in Lisbon, ZOOT founders Andrea and Thomas Probosch guided the class remotely throughout the production and photography process, and our beauty editor Antonia Rosa provided the make-up for the shoot.
Special thanks go to Joao Batalha of ghd Portugal for the hair and to the two modelling agencies that supported our casting, DA BANDA Portugal and Face Models.
We only have one world, so we wanted to know what it means to our four photo teams, how they deal with the growing uncertainty, what worries them most? Each group developed a concept and in one way or another played with the themes of the current zeitgeist – touching on themes such as resilience, resistance, the meaning of freedom and liberty, war and peace, climate change and its impact on our lives, strength and endurance, hope, courage and survival in these difficult political times.
In addition to this publication, the images from the project are exhibited at the PL´A ARTE art fair in Lisbon on 1st March 2025.

CINZA
The CINZA project is a graphic and playful interpretation of an increasingly mechanical and aggressive human presence, in which the visual impact is not only a motivational basis, but also a tool that fantastically projects the metallic massacre that fills our lives and communicates feelings of hysteria, displeasure and incapacity.

BRUTALISTIC
To reflect how we feel about the situation in the world today,
we evoke fear and revolt through street punk and anarchism. We propose the
architectural elements of Brutalism, due to the ‘coldness’ it conveys
through geometric shapes.

FIBRA
For this work we used the concept of ‘calm in chaos’. Calm in Chaos
symbolises the ability to maintain serenity and peace even in a disorganised or even destructive environment. It is the power of emotional resilience and the ability to hold one’s head high in the face of adversity, suffering or uncertainty. The aim is to present images where the viewer can feel the beauty of ‘fragility’ as a metaphor for the resilience and inner strength where people continue to stand up and fight for their freedom and peace despite all the suffering. The result is a combination of fashion with a deep political and emotional message without losing its power, conveying a sense of balance and serenity in an almost devastated environment, highlighting the beauty of resilience and rebuilding.

Many thanks to our team from “GAME OVER” who send these blueprints in addition to their photo selection.
♦ The cyanotype method uses ammonium iron citrate, potassium ferrocyanide, and ultraviolet light to create a contact print. The result is a stable, to-scale ‘Prussian Blue’ copy called a blueprint.
