ZOOT´s all-analog Halloween Special

Sometimes it does not need a lot. For our Halloween production we decided to go the opposite of AI and post production. As our photographer Sergio Santos puts it: “As the pace of fashion becomes more frenetic, so does that of photography – everyone takes photos with an iPhone our case is different. It’s another way of living with photography, it’s more just an image floating on a screen: The photography we have done has no editing or post-production, we photographed everything you see organic and realistic on set. However, the result was something abstract with a futuristic retro feel that fits perfectly for Halloween, enjoy!”

Our working title was “Cyper Hallo Aliens” and we did not have much time to prepare. Thankfully it was possible to unite a great team in short time. Artist Filipe Blanquet was constructing the helmets and masks for the models  with recycled materials he had in his studio:  A felt structure coated in metallic paper – bags and eyes were made of fondant sugar and painted by hand. In addition we had Paulo Vieira creating faboules alien style hair and Sandra Luz for real dangerous nails.

Five days before the photoshoot I received a phone call from Antonia saying she would like to collaborate with me for ZOOT. We agreed that it would be interesting to explore not only  the horror side, but rather the bizarre side of Halloween highlighting also the futuristic, with a certain mysterious charm.

To set the scene photographer Sergio Santos decided not to go the obvious way and do a massive postproduction to add horror and surrealism to the photos but to use the lightpainting technique, inspired by Paolo Roversi. We wanted to go back to the roots of photography. The word photography literally means ‘drawing with light’, which derives from the Greek photo, meaning light and graph, meaning to draw.

For me, photography in this experience is a kind of meditation on the cognitive side, but at the same time, it’s a great challenge to execute the new experiences. The goal of the end result can seem windblown, defying gravity, ghostly or displaced in time…. A simple accident can be a gift or an opportunity. I’ve always liked to be surprised by something unexpected, even the production team was surprised. — Sergio Santos

We wish you a very HAPPY HALLOWEEN with our nightmarish science-fiction motifs and the artistic organic creation on top of the images without Artificial Intelligence.

I love challenging new work with innovative new experiences. The world is saturated with high-resolution, high-definition and perfectly edited images, and sometimes the most surprising quality a photograph can possess is that it doesn’t look like a photograph. — Sergio Santos
