In philosophy mirroring has long been linked to the reflection of the self and the concept of duality: good and evil, light and darkness, life and death. Mirrors shape the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Photographer Sergio Santos asked three models to take self-portraits with the help of their reflection in a mirror, all staged in the inspiring atmosphere of Valentim Quaresma´s atelier. Mirrors enable us to observe ourselves, look at us from different angels, in a different reality and have the power to disclose who we truly are.

The Portuguese fashion scene has been growing and flourishing during the past years. Stylist Monica Lafayette was choosing a mix of Portuguese established and up-and coming designers for this editorial. The combination of volumes, textures and artistic craft that we can see here combined, shows the deep love of Portuguese designers to their rich history and to innovation. The ability of looking into the past and into the future and taking the best combining the both worlds, gives Portuguese design its strength and resilience, especially in challenging times.
My inspiration draws from a blend of Paolo Roversi‘s mirror concept and the ambiance of a Portuguese atelier. The editorial narrates the daily life of the Portuguese fashion industry without explicitly featuring a photographer. Instead, it showcases the artistry of fashion designers, accessories, and attitudes reflected in mirrors. The inclusion of a camera and tripod implies that the photos were taken using a timer. Our aim is to portray the resilience and creativity of the Portuguese fashion industry, emphasizing that it is thriving and infused with love, passion, and a strong connection to our roots.
