In our latest editorial myth and history meet, it is set up in north east England, in Tynemouth. Close to Long Sands Beach is a small sandy bay called King Edward´s Bay, enclosed by cliffs and grassy banks. It is overlooked by Tynemouth Castle and Priory, one of the largest fortified areas in England, dating back nearly 2.000 years to the Iron Age settlement, an Anglo-Saxon monastery, a royal castle and a coastal defence. The rumours go that the ruins of Tynemouth Priory and Castle are host to a Viking ghost called Olaf. Admist this mystical energy where the sea converges with the historical significance of Tynemouth Castle this editorial becomes a visual poem of a Sea Siren temptress. She leaves her fluke behind to dance on the sands from dusk until dawn. Upon sunrise she quickly flees back into to the waters deep.

The team from Newcastle around photographer Lee Scullion created a dreamlike editorial in twilight that blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy at King Edward´s Bay in North England. In Greek mythology, sirens were mythical beings characterized as part-bird, part-woman, and they enticed sailors to their doom with the captivating melody of their song. It was believed that these enchanting creatures were either the daughters of the sea god Phorcys or the river god Achelous. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, the Greek hero Odysseus protected his sailors by blocking their ears with wax, so that they were deaf to the Sirens’ dulcet notes. However, Odysseus himself yearned to hear the song, so he tied himself to the mast, to keep the ship on course. In contemporary English usage, the term “siren” has come to mean “temptress” and has melted with Northern European folklore tales about mermaids, half-fish, half-woman hybrids. Stylist JO Shippen enhanced our etheral mermaid Meg Morton with metall-coloured, see-through and sequined materials.
