Words and interview by Fernanda Russomano

Donning flamboyant costumes and make-up with rich colors and textures, circus performers and traveling acrobats compose one of the oldest forms of entertainment still persisting today. Constantly moving from one place to another, they bring a spectacle of whimsy wherever they go. For this playful editorial Antonia Rosa, ZOOT’s beauty editor, invited Portuguese designer Dino Alves to create unique looks inspired by these popular entertainers, also known as saltimbancos. The ornate painted faces created by Antonia’s team, mixed with audacious pieces from Dino’s previous collections, bring this circus fantasy to life.

What I did was put together pieces from several collections, some older and some more recent, but it was a mix because to be able to do that with just one collection, I would have had to make a circus-inspired collection, and that wasn’t the case. For me it’s more interesting to do styling this way, which is mixing pieces to give a certain mood and to tell a certain story and I end up finding it more interesting to be able to tell that story with pieces that aren’t necessarily inspired by the actual theme. Obviously, the makeup looks were very important because it was the starting point of this editorial, but I always find it more interesting to be able to do this “creative gymnastics” of picking up pieces of clothing that apparently have nothing to do with the circus, but the way they are combined and dressed, for example, create that fantasy.
