20 MAY- 22 OCT: TOMMY NUTTER EXHIBITION AT FASHION AND TEXTILE MUSEUM, LONDON
From the 20th May, the Fashion and Textile Museum in London will present the exhibition “Tommy Nutter – Rebel on the Row”, showcasing the work of this famous British stylist who dressed the great and good of “swinging London” throughout the 70″s and 80″s. The shop “Nutters” opened in 1969 on Savile Row, financed by Cilla Black, James Vallance White and the Beatles” executive Peter Brown, providing bespoke and modern tailoring catering to all the rock stars, artists and aristocrats of the moment who wanted to join the trend of sporting Nutter”s distinctive shapes and cuts. The innovative styling of Tommy Nutter combined with the masterful cutting of Edward Sexton and brought “Oxford” bags, tight jackets and high waists into the mainstream…
While highlighting Nutter”s impressive contribution to Savile Row and London”s style in general through a variety of garments, image and multimedia, the exhibition will also explore the link between the clients and the custom-made garments produced for them. The famous Nutter workrooms, with their ground-breaking window displays, will be recreated at the exhibition, with working cutting tables and tailoring equipment, as well as live tailoring demonstrations taking place at intervals throughout the run of the exhibition.
Tommy Nutter”s legacy still strongly lives on amongst the high fashion of today, with designers such as Tom Ford, Timothy Everest and Ozwald Boateng still paying tribute to Nutter style and Sexton”s cutting. This exhibition at London’s Fashion and Textile Museum will completely recreate the experience of the Nutter phenomenon, giving a unique insight into the innovative and influential workshop as well as its link to the defining images of the era, such as the cultural memories of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in their white suits, or the wedding suits created for Mick and Bianca Jagger.
The exhibition will run until 22nd October 2011, open Tuesday–Sunday 11am-6pm:
