LFW DAY 2: JOHN ROCHA A/W 2011
If you love black, you probably also like the work of French painter, engraver and sculptor Pierre Soulages, famous for celebrating in his works the black colour and for studying the effects it gives out when light reflects upon it or when the colour is applied to different textures. Darkness turns indeed into brightness in Soulages’ monochromatic paintings in which the artist developed his outré-noir concept. Rocha moved from Soulages’ works for his new collection, mixing this main theme with other inspirations, that is nature and landscapes. There was a strong and deconstructed component in the collection with coats and dresses assembled using bits and pieces of wool and crocheted and tufted elements.
Rocha played with shapes creating intricate yet wearable designs and also experimenting with different materials. Though the main palette was drenched in Soulages’ outré-noir, there were also vivid splashes of colour such as a bright red pony skin coat.
