19-23 JAN: RECOLLECTION QUARTETT IN BERLIN

For the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, MoMu, the Fashion Museum in Antwerp and Mercedes-Benz, invited Belgian art director Frederik Heyman and 4 fashion designers – Bernhard Willhelm, Peter Pilotto, Henrik Vibskov and Mikio Sakabe – to create 4 installations around a Mercedes-Benz Young Classic car. They asked the designers to reflect on how the Youngtimers can still inspire us today and to interpret the widely varying connotations associated with these cars into a contemporary context.

R107-BERNHARD-WILLHELM

SL-Class Roadster, 107 model series, 1971 1985
Like no other Mercedes-Benz, this SL-Class Roadster embodies the attitude to life of the 1970s. With its removable hardtop, the car represented a move away from the rigid sports car towards the comfortable, but powerful, luxury two-seater. Following its use in such TV series as “Hart to Hart” and “Dallas”, the Roadster became part of the American way of life.

S123-HENRIK-VIBSKOV

Estate from the 123 model series, 1977 1985
In 1977 the first “T-Model” was launched. The “T” stood for “touring” and “transport”. Thanks to its large boot volume, the model series soon enjoyed widespread use among tradesmen and families. Given its use in the areas of sport and leisure activities, the S 123 is viewed as one of the first ever lifestyle estate cars.

C126-PETER-PILOTTO

S-Class Coupés from the 126 model series, 1985 1991

The C 126 is the “grey eminence” among classic cars. Diplomats and captains of industry had high regard for the discrete luxury of this model series, which combined a straight-lined exterior with an opulent engine line-up.

W115-MIKIO-SAKABE

“Stroke 8” Saloon, model series 114/115, 1967 1976
The W 115 model series impressed with its reliability and its simple, functional design. It is a W 115 which to date still holds an all-time record, having clocked up 4.6 million kilometres. As a result of its reputation, the model series became the epitome of the German company car. It enjoyed recognition around the globe through its widespread use as a taxi.
