SAFE HOMELESS ANIMALS IN PORTUGAL FROM DEATH
In Portugal several so called “Dog Pounds” (in Portuguese “CANIL/GATIL”) exist. But it is not a shelter for dogs or cats like you might know it from Germany or England, it is the place where homeless animals are encaged before they get killed. Unfortunately in Portugal a law still exist that allows putting down the animals, 8 days after being captured. The hygiene conditions in many dog pounds are very bad, the supply with water and food not always sufficient. Some curagious organisations and private people try to help to minimize the animals’ suffering and also try to find an adoption place before they get killed.
One of them is ABRA (Animal Friends Association from Braga) www.abra.org.pt. ABRA’s achievements was to delay that deadline. The main purpose of this association is to take care as most kindly as possible, of all the animals staying in the dog pound and try to make them feel like they’re at home, instead of a dog pound where animals are put to sleep. ABRA insures that all of them have clean cages, food, water, a daily walk to stretch out and breathe some fresh air, tons of petting and caressing.
On ABRAS´s website you can see every day which animals (cats and dogs) do need urgent adoption before getting killed.
