17 DEC – 20 MARCH: "SEEDS" AT MUDE, LISBON
This weekend MUDE is opening a new exhibition “SEEDS”. It is featring 500 varieties of seeds planted in Portugal offering a unique opportunity to find out more about this cultural asset and the design that nature has bequeathed us. MUDE is presenting the exhibition in form of an of an installation, taking advantage of the location’s strong personality (it was the Banco Nacional Ultramarino).
The exhibition is set in the ground level, the former safe. With a reception and vestibule area, individual rooms for clients’ consultations, ceiling in stainless steel panels with recessed lighting, an autonomous ventilation system, combination locks, specific furniture and surveillance route, this is an absolutely singular place by international standards, an example of good design to be preserved in its entirety and which we are now opening up to the public for the first time, making it accessible to the whole city and those who visit it.
For more than 50 years the safes enclosed money and riches, memories and other personal valuables. The 3,552 safe deposit boxes also held a host of other life stories. Generations and generations through which our recent history could also be told. Built by CHUBB with all the requisites of security, sophistication and elegance (distinctive features of this prestigious English company), the vaults were designed specifically for this location during the modernization work carried out to celebrate the centenary of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino in 1964.
They are now opening up to the public for the first time, making it accessible to the whole city and those who visit it.
The idea of SEEDS is to help to raise the general public’s awareness of biodiversity and the preservation of this capital asset that is also synonymous with origin and birth due to its capacity to germinate and create life.
