NICK CAVE´S WONDERFUL WORLD OF SOUNDSUITS
Nick Cave, an artist and educator working out of Chicago, is the creator of full body “soundsuits” . They look like an over-dimensional cuddly toy or strange creature but they are wearable sound sculpture.
Whilst at college, Nick Cave studied dance in Alvin Ailey program. His vision was to build a bridge between dance and art. The costumes are made of layers of metal, pearls, buttons, bead-strings, real hair, feathers and sometimes even old spinning tops – and other things that rub together to make noise. Most of the materials are found at flea-markets.
Many of Cave’s soundsuits are politically/socially inspired and have deeper meanings than just looking fantastic and making rustle sounds.
Cave will stage a fantastic spectacle in the Millennium Park Chicago in 2012: A Sound suit orchestra. 90 Sound suits could easily result in a whole symphony.
